In April 2024, our project ventured to Jászberény (Hungary) where we conducted a workshop entitled New Methods in Teaching for a teacher trainee’s seminar. The primary goal was to introduce innovative approaches to education and foster a collaborative learning environment.
With a turnout of 24 participants, the workshop generated a dynamic and engaging atmosphere. The attendees displayed a keen interest in the activities, which included, i.e., a social simulation game that can later be used in class with their students above 14 years old.
The simulation played on their phones and laptops proved to be an effective tool for engaging the participants and immersing them in the simulated scenario. The activity not only showcased the potential of technology in education but also encouraged problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. A notable observation was the spontaneous formation of groups after the initial round of exercises of the simulation game Up to You!. Participants intuitively gravitated towards individuals from the same virtual countries of the simulation, creating a diverse and inclusive circle that covered all that was going on in a simulated economy of a country.
The workshop also incorporated group activities specifically designed to enhance cooperation and communication to prepare the participants for the virtual game of the social simulation. The shared experience of working collectively, combined with the digital simulation, created a rich learning environment that fostered a sense of bonding among the participants. Additionally, the fact that the group had attended previous seminars together likely contributed to a pre-existing level of familiarity and trust, which facilitated open dialogue and collaboration. Some of the feedback was that “I can’t believe we worked together so closely as a team, I think we need to organise events outside of university time to experience this more often”
Ultimately, the workshop in Jászberény represents a step forward in our project’s mission to promote innovative teaching practices. We are optimistic about the potential of these methods, including the integration of technology, to transform education and inspire a new generation of educators.
